Zeniko has announced the new RF12 M, an ultra-compact round head flash designed for photographers who want a lightweight lighting solution without sacrificing creative flexibility. The new flash combines a pocket-friendly design with features typically found on larger and more expensive speedlights.
Priced at just $49.90, the RF12 M aims to provide an affordable option for portrait, travel, and everyday photographers looking to improve their lighting setup.
Compact Design with a Round Flash Head
The standout feature of the RF12 M is its round flash head, a design more commonly found on premium flash systems.
Unlike traditional rectangular flash heads, a round head produces a more natural circular beam pattern with smoother light falloff. This often results in softer-looking portraits, more gradual transitions between highlights and shadows, and natural-looking circular catchlights in a subject’s eyes.
Despite featuring a round head design, the RF12 M remains extremely compact. The flash measures just 78mm tall and weighs only 90 grams, making it one of the smallest round-head flashes currently available.
Built for Bounce Flash Photography
Although compact, the RF12 M offers a respectable amount of movement for creative lighting.
The flash head can tilt up to 90 degrees and swivel 270 degrees, allowing photographers to bounce light off ceilings and walls for softer, more flattering illumination. Bounce flash techniques are particularly useful for indoor portraits, events, and documentary photography.
The elevated flash position also helps reduce the risk of shadows caused by larger lenses or lens hoods.
Triple-Lens Optical Design
Inside the RF12 M is a Xenon flash tube paired with Zeniko’s proprietary triple-lens optical system. The design combines two Fresnel lenses with a diffusion lens to create what the company describes as a true round lighting effect. According to Zeniko, this produces a bright central beam with smooth edge transitions for more natural-looking illumination.
Simple Operation and Wireless Triggering
The RF12 M uses a universal single-contact hot shoe, making it compatible with most major camera brands. However, the simplified design means photographers will not have access to advanced features such as TTL metering or High-Speed Sync (HSS). Instead, the flash focuses on straightforward manual operation.
Users can select from six power levels ranging from 1/32 power up to full output. The flash also supports optical wireless triggering via S1 and S2 modes, allowing it to be used in multi-light setups.
Built-In Battery
Power is supplied by an integrated 350mAh lithium battery. Zeniko rates the battery for approximately 500 full-power flashes per charge, while recycle times are quoted at around 2.5 seconds at maximum output. Charging is handled through a USB-C port, with a full recharge taking roughly 70 minutes.
The built-in battery design eliminates the need to carry spare AA batteries, helping keep the overall package lightweight and travel-friendly.
Pricing and Availability
The Zeniko RF12 M round head flash is available now through Amazon and other retailers for $49.90.
With its compact size, round-head design, built-in battery, and wireless triggering capabilities, the RF12 M offers an affordable lighting option for photographers looking to add softer flash illumination to their kit without carrying a full-sized speedlight.
